The Self-Employment Income Support Scheme will cover November 2020 to April 2021, and in light of the second lockdown in November the third grant has been increased. Originally the third SEISS grant was worth 20 percent of average monthly trading profits, but this was later doubled to 40 percent. Now the grant is worth 55 percent of profits.

The third grant has increased to 55 percent as November will now be worth 80 percent of average monthly trading profits.

The total grant will be capped at £5,160 for the three-month period between November 2020 and January 2021.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the increase would help the self-employed “get through the months ahead”.

Mr Sunak said: “So far we’ve provided £13.7billion of support to self-employed people through the crisis – and I’ve always said we will continue to do everything we can to support livelihoods across the UK.

“The rapidly changing health picture has meant we have had to act in order to protect people’s lives and I know this is incredibly worrying time for the self-employed.

“That is why we have increased the generosity of the third grant, ensuring those who cannot trade or are facing decreased demand are able to get through the months ahead.”

Another SEISS grant will cover the three months between February to April 2021.

However, HMRC has not yet confirmed how much the grant will be worth and it is currently under review.

When can I apply for the third SEISS grant?

Applications for the second SEISS grant closed on October 19, 2020.

The third SEISS grant is not yet available for applications, but applications will open from November 30, 2020.

HMRC updated the SEISS Government webpage last week to announce applications would open from December 14, 2020.

However, in light of the national lockdown, the date to apply has been brought forward.

With the last two SEISS grants, applicants were contacted and given details on how to apply.

The Government website currently states: “HMRC will provide full details about claiming and applications in guidance on GOV.UK in due course.”

The criteria for applying for the third grant are slightly different from the criteria for the last two grants.

The criteria state to be eligible for the grant extension, self-employed individuals, including members of partnerships, must:

  • Have been previously eligible for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme first and second grant, although they do not have to have claimed the previous grant.
  • Declare that they intend to continue to trade and either are currently actively trading but are impacted by reduced demand due to COVID-19, or were previously trading but are temporarily unable to do so due to COVID-19.
